changes in my school would be a very
complicated process. With this realization, my
respect for the principal has increased (greatly). I
began to see that being a principal is not just a
job having total power over thousands of
people, and more as a kind of diplomatic
nightmare, in which they have to balance the
needs and desires of many groups.
Parents, teachers, students, the school
board and the government all make demands
on the principal. And I imagine quite often their
request will be diametrically opposed. Perhaps
the parents would hope a certain teacher was
stricter, while others wanted him to be more
relaxed. Maybe students will complain about
having too much homework. Well a parent
might push for more work. Or maybe teachers
will ask for better facilities, while the school
